"Die Hochzeit des Figaro"

An anonymous editor wanted to put the German "Die Hochzeit des Figaro" into the lead as an alternative title. I don't think this is right; the work's libretto was written entirely in Italian and it was premiered by a company that, although headquartered in Vienna, consisted almost entirely of Italian singers. I don't think the original editions had "Die Hochzeit des Figaro" on the cover, though I would like to check this point further if I can.

To be sure, a long tradition of performing the opera in German in German-speaking countries did arise; and my own cheap Dover copy of the score attests to this in that the lyrics are given in both Italian and German. But that doesn't mean its title is "Die Hochzeit des Figaro" -- that was for Mozart and Da Ponte to decide.

Lastly, we include the English version simply because this is the English Wikipedia and we want people to understand what the title means. Wikipedias in other languages do the same for their languages. Opus33 (talk) 05:02, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
